Last week, we talked about the ancient Egyptian magical technique of Kheperu, “becoming” or “taking the form of” a Deity. This technique empowers works of magic, and also enables a devotee to share deep communion with a Deity, in this case, Isis.

This is an adaptation of the ritual the group worked together at the Spirit Northwest conference several weeks ago, and which you can use yourself, if you’d like to give it a try.

Purify and consecrate your space and yourself using your favorite method. If you’d like, you can use the purification and consecration section from this offering ritual, the Adma Iset.

Next, open your temple space and yourself with your favorite method. You can also use the Opening of the Ways, which is my own personal favorite way to open my temple space.

As part of the Opening of the Ways, you will have invoked Isis. If the method you chose does not specifically have an invocation of the Goddess, be sure to add one now. You are invoking the Goddess into your space and into yourself.

The Throne posture

Now, be seated in the Throne posture. This is the posture in which you see many Egyptian Deities when They are seated. It goes like this: head erect, face forward, back straight, feet flat on the floor, palms resting gently on your thighs.

Breathe and be aware of the Mother of Isis, Nuet, above you, and Her Father Geb below you. Draw in power from above and below and radiate that power through your own body and into your aura.

Know where you are right now: in your temple space, in your home, outdoors, or some other safe place. You have Opened the Ways unto Isis, only Isis, She Who is Great of Magic, Beautiful of Wings, Bright of Face. And you are still opening, opening, opening unto Isis, only Isis.

Breathe slowly and deeply, in and out. Be aware of your head—and feel your head open and your mind expand. Be aware of your heart—and feel your heart open and expand. Chant Her name, “Isis, Isis, Isis,” as you open up your head and arouse your body. For Her. For Her.

Now let yourself imagine standing in the doorway of a different temple, an ancient temple, Her temple. As you stand on the threshold, you feel welcomed here. With intention, step across the threshold and into the cool, stone interior of the temple of Isis, the Goddess.

Huge, decorated pillars, carved like lotuses and papyrus plants rise up around you. Living plants, in planters and floating in small pools, breathe their green breath into the dry air all around you. Breathe their living breath as you cross the hypostyle hall, full of pillars.

Continue walking straight up the center of the temple. As you do, you pass through another doorway, through the Hall of Offerings, and you then come to yet another doorway—the doorway that leads to Her holy of holies, Her throne room. Stop. Take a breath and on the out-breath, step through the doorway.

You see before you a large figure seated upon Her throne, shrouded by shadow or mist. You will have to look up to see Her. Move a bit closer so that you stand before Her. And yes, do look up.

This is not a statue, but the Living Goddess Isis Herself, seated upon Her Throne—the Throne of Being, the Throne of Becoming. Life is in Her hand. Magic is in Her mouth. As you gaze up at Her, the shadows or mist fall gently away, so that you can now see Her in all Her Divine Beauty. Look up into the face of Isis, the Goddess.

If you feel so moved, kiss the ground before Her beautiful face, or bow to Her in acknowledgement of Her Divinity. As you do, a wave of power—and of compassion—flows forth from Her to you. Let yourself feel it. Accept it. Breathe in and accept, accept, accept the power and compassion of Isis.

Now, move forward until you are at the foot of Her throne. She stands up, steps down from the throne, and looks into your eyes. With a slight smile, She gently turns you around, so that your back is toward Her.

Behind you, feel the movement of air and the shimmer of magic as She opens Her wings—and wraps them gently, but firmly, around you. She pulls you close to Her. Feel Her warmth, the pressure of Her body.

And then, something changes, and She folds you, pulls you, gently, gently, gently into Herself.

Now you are within the body of the Goddess, smaller than She, but within Her. She reseats Herself upon Her throne. Envision this as this Transformation Spell is recited:

The face of Isis is before your face.

The arms of Isis are upon your arms.

The body of Isis surrounds your body.

The thighs of Isis are upon your thighs.

The legs of Isis are upon your legs.

The feet of Isis support your feet.

Now, breathe.

And with each breath, allow yourself, or even will yourself, to become larger and larger, until you are as large as the Divine Form, the Kheper, of the Goddess around you.

In vision, slowly open your eyes, and look out at the world through the eyes of Isis.

Her eyes are your eyes.

Her face is your face.

Her limbs are your limbs.

Her magic is your magic.

Her wisdom is your wisdom.

Her love is your love.

Her power is your power.

Now say out loud, “I am Isis.” Repeat it as many times as you wish, until you sense its truth.

And now—You Who are Isis—You Who are in the Kheper of Isis, speak aloud something about what you perceive.

For instance, do You have wings? If so, what are they like? What colors are You wearing? What implements do You hold in Your hands? How does Your heart feel? What are Your Divine powers? Speak these things aloud, and when you speak, please use the first person, saying “I.”

Once more, O You Who are Isis—You Who are in the Kheper of Isis—reach out your Divine senses to someone you care about, whether a human friend, lover, teacher, or animal companion. Let yourself feel them—where they are, what they are doing—even how they are feeling, and give them Your blessing. There is no need to speak Your blessing aloud, but you may, if you wish.

And when you are complete with this, You Who are Isis, let Your attention turn to the human being who now bears Your Divine Kheper. Look at this person—look at your human self—through the eyes of Isis. Isis sees you. What does She—what do You—see? What does She sense? What does She know? What does She say to your heart? What Blessing or Mystery does She give you?

Now, you begin to end this rite. Your human self and the Great Goddess Isis are going to separate.

Breathe and with each breath, become more and more your normal, human size. When you find yourself within the Kheper of Isis, but smaller than She, the Goddess opens Her Wings. Feel the movement of the air, feel the magic in each feather. Then gently and with grace, step forward, out of the Kheper of Isis

Turn around and thank Her as you will.

With respect, turn and leave the Goddess in Her holy throne room. As you do, you come once again to the Hall of Offerings. If you wish to give an offering to Isis in appreciation, you will find whatever you want to give Her already in your hands—and you can place it upon the offering table with any additional words of thanks you wish.

When you are complete with that, move back through the hypostyle hall, full of pillars, and plants, and pools of sweet water, until you reach the door where you first entered. As you pass the threshold, turn to look at Her temple once more, then let the vision fade. Come back to yourself, in this place, and at this time. When you are ready, open your physical eyes and look around.

Close the rite with whatever closing is appropriate for you way you opened it. For example, if you used the Opening of the Ways, you will now Close the Ways, as in the link above.

When you are finished, gaze at the sacred image of Isis upon your own altar (if you have one) and say, “Be in peace, Isis, be in peace. Amma, Iset.”
